What is Monsters Under the Bed (MUTB)?
Monsters Under the Bed is a creative writing school that focuses on teaching primary, secondary and tertiary level students the literary arts (eg. poems, short stories, novels, etc). Everyone who works in MUTB is at least an aspiring writer and gaming experience (whether board games, card games and RPGs) is considered a plus as we feel it enhances creativity. MUTB personnel were fully involved in the design and production of “Journal, Singapore”.
What is Outpost Gaming Studios (OGS)?
Outpost Gaming Studios is an artist collective whose members create various forms of visual art. OGS artists created all the art that was featured in “Journal, Singapore” and a majority of its members are based in Singapore. Most of its artists have day jobs in the arts and/or games industry.
What is the Heritage Industry Incentive Programme (HI2P)?
The HI2P programme was started in 2007 by the National Heritage Board (NHB) to support companies and organizations who are involved in promoting historical and heritage products and services. Approved projects will receive partial funding to help defray cost. Without HI2P funding, most of the projects approved would not have seen the light of day.
Who designed “Journal, Singapore”?
The lead designer of “Journal, Singapore” is Ryan J. Ong, a Programme Developer for MUTB. Ryan develops creative writing programmes for secondary level students and is a writer himself.
Why did MUTB & OGS decide to design “Journal, Singapore”?
Monsters Under the Bed prides itself on being creative in our projects, and we regularly sit down and have informal “brainstorming” meetings. During one of these meetings, we managed to create a rules skeleton of a concept board game. Seeing that NHB had put out a call for projects under the aegis of HI2P, we decided to submit our board game for approval. And the rest, as they say, is history. |
